A filmmaker who also gives motivational talks, she is the creator of The Until the Violence Stops: NYC Women’s Film Festival in association with V-Day. Former Producing Host of HBO’s interstitial politically incorrect talk show CHAT ZONE and syndicated NBC hip hop news show THE SOURCE: ALL ACCESS, Abiola Abrams’ artistic films – ranging from edgy ‘chick flicks’ to socially conscious docs investigate the themes of gender, race and empowerment. The goal of all of her work is to create inspiration: politically, emotionally and sexually. She was raised between New York City and Guyana, South America.
Abiola was one of 4 filmmakers selected from 3600 to direct a short film with an international cast & crew in Germany. The result was STRANDED airing on BET and premiering at The Berlinale. Her docs include KNIVES IN MY THROAT about not being undone by mental illness, TABOO about the dynamics of interracial love and museum doc FINDING A PLACE, MAINTAINING TIES. Other directing projects include experimental short OPHELIA’S OPERA, a domestic violence revenge fable; CABLE CROSSINGS, an interstitial soap on a CNBC Network; & short THE BLACK COUNT. Abiola was Associate Producer of both LOOSE KNIT, a Theresa Rebeck play, and THE DOLL COLLECTOR, an A&E Network film. Other VJ credits include MTV pilot GET OVER IT and Japan’s PerfecTV HOTSHOTS.
